How big is God?

Psalm 45:1ff To the Chief Musician.

Set to “The Lilies.”

A Song of Love.
My heart is overflowing with a good theme;
I recite my composition concerning the King;
My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.
You are fairer than the sons of men;
Grace is poured upon Your lips;
Therefore God has blessed You forever.
Gird Your sword upon Your thigh, O Mighty One,
With Your glory and Your majesty.
And in Your majesty ride on
because of truth, humility, and righteousness;
And Your right hand shall teach You awesome things!
Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the King's enemies;
The peoples fall under You.
Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom!
Alleluia!

My heart is overflowing with a good theme. I sing my song to the King. Alleluia!

I’ve been overwhelmed recently, thinking on Providence, and the goodness of God. Specifically, how God answers prayer even when we can’t see His hand or see His action in events…still, He is there, silently, quietly and effectively, behind the scenes, working out His good purpose in and through events.

As I’ve reflected on several recent events, and meditated on the goodness of God, a song came to mind, which my mother sang to me as a child. The song asks the question, “How Big Is God?” And, for a child’s mind, it answers with comfort and good theology: “God is big enough to fill this vast universe, yet small enough to live in my heart!” Big enough to conquer, small enough to care!

In one sentence it captures the transcendence and immanence of the Holy, personal God – and puts it on a child’s level. And since I strive to be, as Jesus put it, a child in God’s eyes…the song still touches me! And it echoes in the heart of the man, whose heart ‘overflows with a good theme,’ singing the song to the King!
Though men may strive to go beyond the reach of space
To crawl beyond the distant shining stars
This world's a room so small within my Master's house --
The open sky but a portion of his yard.

How big is God, how big and wide His vast domain?
To try to tell these lips can only start
He's big enough to rule this mighty universe
Yet small enough to live within my heart.

As autumn chill may cause the tiny seed to fall…
To lie asleep till waked by summer's rain
The heart grown cold will warm and throb with life anew
The Master's touch will bring the glow again.

How big is God, how big and wide His vast domain?
To try to tell these lips can only start
He's big enough to rule this mighty universe
Yet small enough to live within my heart.

Alleluia!

The warrior and the child. God grant the paradox will continue and grow in my heart until that final day!

I sing my song to the King, and strive to walk as a king under Him…

Alleluia!

Hello Loy,
This morning, as I read my devotion that referenced ephesians 3:20, the writer noted: "GOD who is Rich in Mercy, Unfathomable in Love, Limitless in Grace, and Abundant in Power, has committed the entire resources of heaven to grant "above all that we ask or think" in order that HIS glory may be manifest "...to all generations."" 'The song How big is GOD' came to mind. I ,too, learned that song as a child. I google'd and found Psalm 45, as well as the words on your website. My heart is joyful and I feel Blessed Indeed. When I began my devotion I had a headache. Now the headache is gone, and my Heart is Joyful. Thanks for sharing your journal. May the Joy of the LORD be Your Strength. June.

Thank you so much, June!

I receive that blessing, and to God be the praise. He is good, indeed!

Thanks for taking time to share -- and may this touch echo in your life...

In Christ,

Loy

Hello Loy. While sitting in church last Sunday (and it being my first time in church in 5 weeks because of an emergency hospital stay for many weeks) God sang to me a song I heard from my best friend's mother (her dad was my pastor) while sitting at their piano when I was a very young teenager. The song was "How Big Is GOD" I've been humming that song in my heart and mind for over 35 years and have never heard it sung except by my friend's mother. I came into the computer tonight in the hopes of finding the words to it and being able to find it to purchase somewhere--and Google took me to your website. And there, in all of it's glory, are written the words of that glorious song. Do you have ANY IDEA where I might find a copy of it? I am practically computer illiterate and merely want to hear that song sung again before the Lord calls me home--which I hope is a very long time. The song is such a real reminder of God's vast love for us--a love that fills our hearts if we but accept it by His Grace. God bless you.

Hi Peggy!

God grant you continued healing...and may you find "as your day so your strength shall be!"

Here is a version of that song sung by John Hall and the Gaithers -- I'm not sure of any other version out there, ok?

God bless you, and thanks for your thoughts.

I'm checking in here, as a first-timer, because I Googled the song, "How big is God?" I learned it more years ago than I can remember, but had not heard it in many years. Then God brought it to mind several weeks ago, and again in church, this morning. What an incredible song of praise it is!

I'm bookmarking your blog for frequent visits. Blessings, mercy and joy be yours!
