The winter light often produces a natural monochrome on the landscape -- where all the colors run into grey, in varying shades. The look can be dramatic! I just had to snap this pic, where the sky and trees and water and hills all paint a monochrome scene: the "freshly washed" look of winter time.
Note: I took this a week ago. Today it is snowing -- making the scenery totally different! :-)
